Current RV Influences and Resources

IMG_0205

As I enter my 3rd year of life on the RV journey I have pared down the number of books, magazines and web sites that I go to for information. I immersed myself in the subject following my retirement, devoting many hours of each day formerly taken up with work toward the ravenous hunger I had to get up-to-speed on the current state of the RV world. It is a place with many diverse and sometimes opposing ideas about how to proceed; you’ll find debates over towing, the ‘best’ RV type to own, whether or not to monitor tire pressure and disposing of waste. The best option is the one you try, that works for you. I wanted to highlight the sites that have been of the greatest value to me in my own RV journey:

Cheap RV Living / H.O.W.A. (Housing on Wheels Alliance):

Bob Wells is man who stumbled in to living in a van following his divorce in 2005 when it was the only place he could find to stay. As time passed it gradually dawned on him that even though this was only a temporary arrangement, he had actually grown to prefer living in a movable van over living in a ‘sticks and bricks’ home. He does great interviews with a variety of people who have embarked on life on the road, in vans, trailers, cars and school buses. He has also co-created an organization to support those people who may be able to live in their vehicle as an alternative to being homeless.

Carolyn’s RV Life:

I have come to realize that no one I have seen on YouTube is more honest, true and real that Carolyn. She not only takes you through the logistics of RV living and sharing her videos of all the places she visits, but also the emotional factors of fear, uncertainty and loneliness that can occur at some parts of the journey. A true hero of the RV community.

RVer TV

Russ drives around his hub of Quartzsite AZ and really makes you feel like his passenger. Great local insights and superb drone footage that really gives you the lay of the land. He has also taken trips around the country and documented van builds.

Technomadia:

Cherie and Chris are a couple who have been on the road for over a decade. They cover many aspects of the RV lifestyle, and even include information on their boat. They have a technical insight that is key in cellular and WiFi discussions.

Long Long Honeymoon:

A couple who have been on the road for many years, and they create informative and entertaining videos on many aspects of RV travel.

RV Forum:

There’s no doubt that YouTube is a leading way to learn more about the RV world than any other resource, but the RV Forum is an excellent online resource to dig deeper in to specific components of your RV. You can be as RV-specific as you’d like to be, and find a community of fellow RVers who are more than willing to share their experience and knowledge.

Boondockers Welcome:

This is a paid site that allows you to identify fellow RVers who are willing to open up there home locations to accommodate your RV for the night. It’s been key for my travel as I make my way from one part of the country to another, and I’ve met some wonderful hosts. You key in your specific vehicle information to assure that the host site can fit your vehicle. While many people use Walmart, Cracker Barrel and other free overnight locations, I prefer the Boondockers Welcome re
